The Story Behind Local Street MarketPlace

Every business has a story. And, the story behind Local Street Marketplace is a great one because it’s all about family.

JULY 27,2020

Desiree de Barros & Tina Hercules founded Local Street in 2021 with the vision of supporting the shop local movement, and to support local small businesses. Eight months later, passionate about the vision, Nicki joined the team. The fact that Local Street is a family run business is not unique, but what makes this one special is how these three entrepreneurs are connected. Tina is married to Desiree’s son Laird. And, Laird is Nikki’s stepson!

“When I met my husband Laird and started to get to know the family, I really admired how the whole family created an amazing space for Laird and all the kids.”

It’s Not Normal. But It Works

Over three decades ago Nikki married Desiree’s ex-husband, but rather than become rivals the two women bonded at Laird’s baseball games. Fast forward twenty years and along comes Tina. “When I met my husband Laird and started to get to know the family, I really admired how the whole family created an amazing space for Laird and all the kids.”

No anger. No animosity. All the children grew up playing together. And, not only did the families gather for Christmas and Thanksgiving, but the parents also socialized without the children. According to Nikki,

“We always looked out for each other and when we tell people about our family, they think we’re crazy.”

It may not be common, or considered ‘normal,’ but it works beautifully both personally and professionally for these three women.

The Local Street Family

The women are also appreciative of the role family dynamics plays in how they work together. If one is tired, the others encourage them to take a break. This type of support is unheard of in a traditional workplace environment. Desiree, Tina and Nikki all agree—their situation is a gift.

This gift is passed along to all the businesses who become part of the Local Street community because they are treated like one of the family. These incredible women have it all figured out. They are the solid foundation of both their extended and the Local Street family because that’s what it’s all about—family.
